Abstract
The prognostic value of a staging classification of aortic stenosis (AS) based on the extent of cardiac damage has been unclear in asymptomatic severe AS(1). The RECOVERY (Randomized Comparison of Early Surgery versus Conventional Treatment in Very Severe Aortic Stenosis) trial showed that early surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR), as compared with conservative management, significantly reduced the rates of cardiovascular death and death from any cause in asymptomatic patients with very severe AS(2). We sought to evaluate the impact of the staging classification on survival in the RECOVERY trial.
